Farnham Chambers is a barristers' chambers providing PUBLIC ACCESS in the Farnham area, covering:

Due to recent changes in the law, anyone can now consult directly with barristers "PUBLIC ACCESS".

The advatanges of instructing a barrister directly via PUBLIC ACCESS are:

  • Less Expense: Barristers have lower overheads than firms of solicitors and so can provide a very competitive service. Also, you benefit from not having to pay 2 sets of professionals - namely, solicitors and barristers. In addition, barristers tend to charge on a piece of work as opposed to by the hour. This means that it is in the barrister's interests to be efficient.

  • Expert Advice from the Outset: Barristers are specialists in court advocacy, since their training and practice is focused on advocacy at trial, whereas solicitors spend the majority of their time outside of court (if they attend court at all). In addition, barristers tend to be experts in specific areas of law, since they are used to arguing points of law at trial and on appeal.

  • Continuity: Public access barristers are able to take the case from the drafting of initial correspondence through to trial, and even appeal, as barristers have access to any level of court, whereas most solicitors are not allowed to appear in the higher and appeal courts.

Clarify the nature of your problem, and what it is that you want the barrister to do. Please see our section on the law to get an idea of the relevant area. You can click on the 'law' link above as well.

It is important to point out that the range of work barristers can accept via public access is limited and chambers cannot accept instructions in family or criminal proceedings or immigration matters, except from a solicitor. Please see the 'barristers' functions' link for more details.

Also, barristers cannot send or receive correspondence on clients' behalf - we can only provide drafts for the client's action. We cannot receive client money and we cannot, for instance, action the conveyancing of a property.

It is part of our ethos to assist wherever possible and, to this end, even where we cannot take a case on, we will be at pains to provide our clients with details of a suitable solicitor, including areas of specialism, fees, and contact information, attempting to arrange an appointment at that time.

Farnham Chambers is a new practice, recently established in the Farnham area.

Chambers was conceived to provide members of the public direct access to a court advocate (barrister) with a relevant specialism.

Chambers believes in providing the highest level of service at extremely competitive prices, and you may be able to benefit from a fixed price quote, instead of an hourly rate.

Chambers undertakes charitable work pro bono (for free) and accepts instructions from FRU, and local law centres.

The barrister in your case will almost always provide a written opinion in your case before trial, so that you are clear about your prospects of success, and any potential costs liabilities that may result.

Furthermore, if unsuccessful at the first instance, there are situations where the barrister may offer to conduct some appeal work for free.

At present, chambers is conducting one appeal for free before the Employment Appeal Tribunal, which concerns an issue of wider public significance.
